quiz thursday - using sin, cos, tan to find angles and sides

611 - D block - due Friday 13.11.01

finish 4.3 ws - multiplying polynomials

612 - A block - due Thursday 13.10.31 (boo!)

1. print the following worksheet - 612ATchapter7.4

2. do not do the side with Pascal's triangle (bring it to class on thursday though) - only do numbers 6 - 16 - factoring cubes!

notes: factoring cubes

always look for GCF first (as with any factoring)

(x^3 + y^3)

the factored form will be a binomial times a trinomial.

to find the binomial... simply take the cube root of each (x + y)

to find the trinomial... (using the binomial you just found) - square the first term (x^2), then multiply the first term by the second term and use the opposite sign (- xy) and then square the second term (y^2)

the result: (x + y)(x^2 - xy + y^2)

example:

3x^3 - 81
3(x^3 - 27)
3(x - 3)(x^2 + 3x + 9)

623 - E block - due Wednesday 13.10.30

1.. finished 10.1 ws - sine, cosine and tangent (not just tangent from monday)

2.. 2.. THIS PROBLEM WILL BE COLLECTED ON WEDNESDAY - IT SHOULD BE DONE ON A SEPARATE PIECE OF PAPER.  THE PROBLEM WILL BE GRADED AS A 6 POINT QUIZ GRADE!

You are leaning a ladder against your house. The side of your house is perpendicular to the ground.  The maximum height of the ladder is 28 feet.  At what height will the ladder touch the house if the angle of elevation of the ladder (angle at the ground) is 78 degrees?

a.. draw a diagram.
b.. solve.

notes:

SOH - CAH - TOA

sin (θ) = opp / hyp

cos (θ) = adj / hyp

tan (θ) = opp / adj

1. finish 15.7 ws

2. big quiz friday 13.10.25 - chapter 15.1, 3, 5, 6 and 7.

612 - A block - due Tuesday 13.10.22

complete pages 3 and 4 in the "families of functions" packet.

NOTES:
if the constant is NOT grouped with x (like in #1 on page 3) then y-values are affected. if (like in #1) it is "y = x^2 - 2" then the graph looks exactly like the parabola on page 1, but shifts DOWN 2 units. if it was "y = x^2 + 2" then everything would shift UP two units.

if the constant IS grouped with x (like in #2 on page 3) then x-values are affected. if (like in #2) it is "y = (x - 2)^2" then the graph still looks exactly like the parabola on page 1, but it shifts to the RIGHT two units. if it was "y = (x + 2)^2" then everything would shift to the LEFT two units.

in general, if the equation is written in "y = " form, then x-values are affected in the opposite manner in which the equation shows (- is RIGHT while + is LEFT) and y-values are affected in the same manner in which the equation shows (- is DOWN while + is UP).

2. check 15.1 solutions below.
#s 1 - 6
#s 7 - 14

i just realized a couple of my questions (shaded area) are different. that does not mean that you are wrong - so pay attention to what the question is asking. you SHOULD have a couple different answers.  we will fix it in class on tuesday.

612 - A block - due Wednesday 13.10.16

1. finish 6.14 ws - solution to the first problem posted below.

explanation for the exponents in number 1... it says "find a particular equation... of years that have elapsed past 1970." so, this means that in 1970,  zero years have elapsed... so 1970 is "year zero." if you made the exponent 1970 instead of zero you would not be wrong... but your "a" value would be very small because you'd be finding the population in actual year zero (like biblical times). if 1970 is "year zero", then 1980 (ten years later) is "year 10."we could make year zero anything... if you did the same problem but made 1900 year zero, you would still get the same "b" value, but a different "a" value.  make sense?

anyway... here is the solution.

2. QUIZ NEXT FRIDAY!! 6.2 - 6.6 and 6.14

4. some notes on the BIG quiz tomorrow...
- understand the difference between "finding x when f(x) = 5" and "finding f(5)"

- when completing the square - if there is a coefficient in from of the x^2 term - it must be factored out to get the coefficient to be 1. be careful when adding to the other side!!

- sqrt (-1) = i,   i^2 = -1,   i^3 = -i,   i^4 = 1 - - - divide exponent by 4 - remainders .25 (1), .5 (2) .75 (3)

- given solutions, find quadratic - know the formulas! b/a = -(s1 + s2) and c/a = (s1)(s2)

- find quadratic model!! 2-1, 3-2 to cancel c values. BE CAREFUL WITH SIGNS!! then, it is simply solving a 2 variable system.

- with a word problem involving quadrics... max or min height is the y-value of the vertex, the ground is the x-intercepts, time zero is the y-intercept.

- will  a quadratic ever equal a certain value? discriminant. b^2 - 4ac

- know the vertex formula x = -b/2a and how to get into vertex form (complete the square)

THE BIG QUIZ IS GOING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE THE REVIEW... A WHOLE LOT (INSERT WINKS AND NUDGES HERE). IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR MORE PROBLEMS TO PRACTICE (YOU SHOULD BE) - DO SOME ODD NUMBERS OUT OF THE BOOK AND CHECK YOUR ANSWERS!!

GOOD LUCK.
